One of the challenges of teaching Japanese online is how to teach writing. Since it’s important to learn recognition of kana and kanji, as well as know how to write them, how can we teach students to write in the online environment, and how can we do assessment of student writing? At the June 22, 2020, webinar, presenter Ellen Bearn showed ways of collaborating with students for writing practice and suggest a way to assess students’ writing abilities. Her demonstration used PowerPoint slides and Padlet, both simple tools that are easily accessible.

Presenter:

For about 10 years, she was an adjunct instructor in the traditional classroom at Lehigh University, and for over 10 years, she has been teaching Japanese online for public and cyber high schools in Pennsylvania. She was born in Japan and lived there until moving to the US to attend college.
