Presenter: Dr. Takako Aikawa, Massachusetts Institute of Technology

The remote instruction forced by the pandemic provided invaluable opportunities to learn new technologies and teaching skills, and we are about to live in what is called the “new normal period”. Society will change, along with our communication styles, as the skill sets necessary for survival in the new normal period evolve. As such, we need to un-learn and re-learn our pedagogical strategies for language education. But, how? First, Aikawa sensei discussed takeaways from our remote instruction during the pandemic. Second, she introduced sample learning activities that she conducted during the pandemic. Last, she presented a new hybrid-model that synergizes synchronous and asynchronous learning environments. The goal of the talk was to inspire us to un-learn and re-learn, and give us opportunities to explore ideas together for the advancement of our new language pedagogy.
