This webinar on the “big picture” in Japanese Language education began with the presentation of the 2020 AATJ Teacher Awards to Kyoko French and Magara Maeda, followed by a panel discussion. The discussion included a report on the most recent Japan Foundation survey of Japanese language enrollments in the United States, conducted in 2018, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the future of Japanese language education for both JFL and heritage learners.
Panelists included Counselor Kotaro Oe, Embassy of Japan in the United States of America; Mr. Shimpei Ishii, The Japan Foundation, Los Angeles; Mr. Hiroyuki Takai, Former General Manager of Sumitomo Corporation, Washington, DC; Ms. Grace Sayuri Ahearn, Sumitomo Corporation of the Americas; and Dr. Masako Douglas, California State University, Long Beach.
