This Special Interest Group focuses on translation and interpreting, and teaching those skills. Literary translation is a primary interest of many who work in the Japanese language field; but there is also interest in the work of translating other types of materials from and to Japanese as well as that of interpreting between Japanese and English. These days, translators and interpreters also need to consider AI, which can be seen as a potential threat that will put translators out of work or as a source of exciting opportunities for innovation.

The SIG will organize panels at the annual conferences and solicit journal and newsletter contributions on topics related to translating and interpreting (including teaching translating and interpreting and introducing these fields to students as possible careers).
