The Japanese as a Heritage Language Special Interest Group (JHL SIG) was established in 2001, coinciding with the shift in perspective in the United States at the end of the 20th century, which began to view heritage languages as an important resource for the country, both economically and politically. It aims to provide a home base for collecting and disseminating research findings in the field, and promoting JHL education. We publish research papers and reports on curriculum and instructional materials through our on-line journal, post conference paper abstracts on the SIG web site. Since the establishment of the JHL SIG, there has been an increase in institutions dealing with heritage languages education in the United States, along with changes and progress in policy and research regarding heritage language education. This site will continue to update the list of such institutions to provide an overview of any changes in the heritage language education landscape.
We host a mailing list for information exchange and discussion on JHL issues among the JHL SIG members. All AATJ members who are interested in JHL education and research are welcome.
Our special interest group belongs to AATJ. Therefore, if you’re a member of AATJ and interested in this group, you’re welcome to join. Please refer to the Mailing List section.
The SIG’s primary goals include, but will not be limited to:
- Provides a forum for educators and researchers in the field of JHL to publish their research as well as their practical ideas;
- Promote JHL education;
- Provide information on the organizations that engage in heritage language research and education
- Provide opportunities for information exchange among the JHL SIG members
