The Classical Japanese Special Interest Group aims to improve the teaching and learning of classical Japanese by sharing curricular ideas and resources, discussing shared challenges, and developing networks of collegiality among faculty, students, and scholars. The primary activity of the Group is its annual spring meeting held in conjunction with the conferences of AATJ and AAS. All are welcome to attend these meetings. Group membership is free and open to all. Proposals of meeting topics are always welcome—simply email the Group coordinator as listed below.
Past meetings have been held in person, virtually, and a combination of both. The format of the meeting varies—single or multiple presenter(s), panel discussions, Q/A and more. We always try to have plenty of time for group discussion. Presenters and discussants are welcome from all career phases, from graduate students to senior scholars. Past meeting topics have included: the past and future of classical Japanese in the university curriculum; pandemics and online pedagogy; transmission of praxis, teaching materials, and methodologies; and a discussion of the intercollegiate classical Japanese poetry contest.
