This Special Interest Group (Japanese Linguistics and Pedagogy) aims to foster a community centered on Japanese linguistics within the context of Japanese language pedagogy. By bringing together a wide range of language-related topics, the SIG provides a space for participants to engage in discussion, share ideas, and explore linguistic perspectives on Japanese.
The SIG is open to everyone. It seeks to create an inclusive and supportive environment where participants—-whether or not they have formal training in linguistics or teaching experience—-can connect and deepen their understanding of language.
The SIG also seeks to build a network for those who wish to explore Japanese linguistics in greater depth. It will encourage informal presentations and open discussions on topics of interest. These exchanges may develop into conference panels or serve as a platform for preliminary research, including pilot studies and participant recruitment.
Goals:
The goals of this SIG include, but are not limited to, the following:
- To promote the study of Japanese linguistics as a foundation for Japanese language pedagogy
- To enhance our understanding of the Japanese language to apply it to Japanese language teaching and learning
- To encourage open discussion of linguistic questions and ongoing research
- To build and expand a network of individuals interested in Japanese linguistics
- To develop discussions within the SIG into broader scholarly activities, including conference panels and other collaborative initiatives
Activities:
- Regular informal online meetings over tea/coffee to foster a sense of community
- Possible Activities at Informal Meetings
- Sharing and discussion of participants’ teaching practices and pedagogical approaches
- Sharing and discussion of participants’ research topics and work in progress
- Reading and discussion of selected publications (articles or books)
- One or two annual events, such as presentations or workshops, to highlight topics of shared interest
