The 2027 AATJ Annual Spring Conference will be held on Thursday, March 18, 2027, in Boston, Massachusetts, in conjunction with the 2027 Association for Asian Studies Annual Conference. (Zenyasai takes place from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, March 17).
We are delighted to announce our keynote speaker:

Poster sessions (Wednesday, March 17 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. EDT) are 60 minutes long. Graduate students and early-career professionals who have begun teaching within the past two years are encouraged to submit a poster proposal. Poster sessions provide an interactive opportunity to share research, innovative teaching practices, classroom projects, and works in progress while engaging in conversation and exchanging ideas with conference attendees.
Please note:
- The Poster Category is open only to current graduate students and early-career professionals, defined as individuals who have been teaching for two ears or less. Submissions from individuals out side these categories are not eligible for consideration.
- Individuals may submit only one proposal, as presenter, co-presenter, discussant, or panel member. This includes participation in SIG panels and presentations.
This will be an in-person conference, and all presenters are required to attend and present in person. In addition, all presenters must be current AATJ members in good standing (i.e., annual membership dues must be paid) at the time of the conference.
Our conference brings together participants with diverse academic, professional, cultural, and personal backgrounds. Presenters are encouraged to create sessions that are welcoming and accessible to this broad audience and that promote meaningful participation and exchange of ideas.
Thanks to The Oka Professional Development Fund, five $1,000 scholarships will be available for participants in the 2027 AATJ Spring Conference. Priority will be given to three groups— (1) presenters, (2) graduate students, and (3) junior faculty/early-career instructors. Further details will be announced later this year, and early-career scholars are strongly encouraged to submit a proposal.
AATJ Statement on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
AATJ values a scholarly community that is inclusive, equitable, and welcoming to individuals from diverse backgrounds and perspectives. We believe that the strength of our field rests on the exchange of ideas across a broad range of experiences, research traditions, and professional contexts.
In response to evolving legal and institutional considerations, AATJ has removed the diversity and inclusion criterion from the 2026 conference proposal review rubric. This change does not reflect a shift in the Association’s core values. Rather, it is intended to maintain a fair, consistent, and effective review process while adapting to the current environment.
AATJ continues to support and encourage scholarship that explores issues of diversity, equity, inclusion, access, and representation, recognizing the important contributions such work makes to our field and professional community.
