Overview

The department of Asian Languages and Cultures at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, is seeking a part-time language lab instructor for the 2025-2026 academic year, September 2, 2025 – May 31, 2026. Language Lab Instructors teach small-group sections that supplement Japanese language courses taught by professors, and they plan cultural events.

This .56FTE part-time benefits-eligible staff position is active during the 9-month academic calendar (September-May) but paid over 12 months (September-August). During the academic year, this position works approximately 26 hours per week. 

About The Department:

Macalester’s Asian Languages and Cultures department offers Mandarin Chinese and Japanese languages courses, as well as a range of seminars designed to help students deepen their understanding of East Asian literature, film, linguistics, music, geography, art history, religion, politics, and anthropology. Our department is committed to inclusive teaching and learning in all of our classes.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare materials for and teach all lab classes (8 or 9 classes per week, but only 3 preps; one prep can cover 2-3 classes)
  • Hold regular office hours
  • Weekly meeting with faculty
  • Plan cultural events

Qualifications

  • B.A or higher
  • Teaching experience at the college level is preferred but not required.
  • Advanced proficiency in all modalities of Japanese and English
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

Compensation

  • Salary range: $28,000 – $31,100, based on the qualifications and experience.
