The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Washington University in St. Louis invites applications for full-time Teaching Track positions in Japanese language at the ranks of Senior Lecturer and Lecturer to begin in Fall 2025.
Responsibilities include teaching or co-teaching all levels of modern Japanese language, supporting curriculum development, and creating/expanding teaching materials. Senior lecturer is expected to also lead and coordinate with other instructors in the Japanese language section to further develop and enhance the curriculum.
Applicant Qualifications:
Candidates for the rank of Senior Lecturer must have a PhD in Japanese linguistics, communicative/proficiency-based language pedagogy, second-language acquisition or a related field; native or near-native proficiency in Japanese and English. Candidates must also have a minimum of the equivalent of six years of fulltime teaching experience and an extensive record of excellence in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate level, advising, and service (such as mentoring and programmatic planning) consistent with Washington University’s teaching-track policies. The initial term of the appointment will be for three years at the senior lecturer rank, with renewal contingent upon performance.
Candidates for the Lecturer position must have a minimum of an M.A., with strong preference for a Ph.D., in Japanese linguistics, communicative/proficiency-based language pedagogy, second-language acquisition or a related field by the time of appointment. Requirements include a minimum of two years of college teaching experience, native or near-native proficiency in Japanese and English, and evidence of on-going commitment to language teaching.
